Yikes. Trying to use some greyscale markers to make myself think more in value than just line. I need to work on this. A lot.And what’s up with his hand? I needed a photo ref for that. . . . Ooh, on another note, the Adam Hughes DVD came out recently. I just had to buy it (like a lot of people) because the man knows how to create great art.

A Boy and His Octopus

I thought I would try my hand at inking something since I haven’t done it in a while. And I’ve found that it’s not terribly easy. The above picture is more than halfway done, but it still needs work to bring focus into the central figures of the boy and his dog. What might have worked better is if I had kept all of the tentacles white, then made the background black, or at least mostly black, possibly hinting at outerspace. Hmm, perhaps doing that and then adding some retro glass bubble helmets to the boy and his dog as well . . . . Or I could crop the picture to fully focus on the intense gaze of the space octopus and the kid. Ok, I seem to be thinking out loud here. I’ll see what I can do to make it take shape more.

Some warm-up sketches from a couple of days back that I figured I would share. I don’t use non-photo blue pencils all that much, but I will say that they give me a sense of freedom with my pencil strokes, allowing me to experiment a bit more. I’ll have to utilize them more in the future.

Captain Revisited

No new warm up sketch today, so I thought I would share a Captain from the Lord of the Rings Online, a character sketch which I am using as a reference for a larger piece of art. It was an attempt to translate the in-game armor to something more realistic. The shoulder pieces got a bit wonky and don’t work, but I have since been able to change their look to something better in the final piece. I’ll share it here when I get it finished.

Two different types of sketches, both succeeding and failing in their own unique ways; these were both warm-up sketches I was doing over the past couple of days prior to working on a large piece which is far, far overdue for a very patient person. Best not to jinx the progress by saying anything more.

Oh, I added some links over to the right —->. Paper Wings Podcast has been around for a bit, but I recently this podcast “for visual storytellers.” Webcomics.com has some good stuff on it, although you’ll need to pay $30 to access its content over a years time. And Ley Lines, by Robin Dempsey, is an ambitious foray into storytelling. I have only just begun reading it so I’ll let you know how it goes.

A passable rendition of Katy Perry from a photo reference. It started out pretty ugly looking but after some erasing and adjusting this rough sketch turned out OK. As someone once said, each time you draw you are going to reach that “ugly stage” where the thing just looks terrible. If you don’t continue and push past that point, you’ll never complete any of your drawings. Gotta keep on drawing.

Oh, a belated congratulations to the Green Bay Packers on their 13th World Championship and 4th Super Bowl win. Rodgers and company, you guys played well on Sunday.
