Ok,this is a bare bones sketch to lay down the framework for a finished painting in Painter. When you take a look at,what do you have? Two people fighting in their skivvies. Always a good subject matter. But if you look closely . . .bah, its still two people fighting in their underwear. But its based once more on the Star Wars game that has been permeating my mind as of late. Brianna, the Handmaiden,is testing the player character,The Exile,in a test of combat. But since clothing restricts the forms used, each person must divest themselves of that which would hinder them. . . thus, losing all but the Hanes (and Hanes Her Way).
This sketch was done on the same day that another Bastila picture was done. In the end,I decided to start the Bastila painting. After that is done,I will return to this piece. I hope.
You know how things are.
Actually, both of these picture were started last night after I spent a fruitless evening trying to paint with Painter. I was attempting to get back into using color with another picture that is still brewing (another character,Atton),but I was having little success with it. I just couldn’t get my head wrapped around painting in a digital medium (well, with any medium,I guess, but I currenly don’t have an room to try my skills in traditional painting. Plus, its scary.
) So today I went down to a Barnes and Noble, bought a coffee, and sat for a bit looking over several painting books, including some detailing portraiture painting.
From this I discovered a few things. One is something that I have heard of before but I tend to forget it. That you have to start general and work your way to the specific. Don’t get hung up on the details or you’ll drown right off the bat. Deal with the details once you have the general forms down. And the second thing is that if you can draw the basic forms, then the rest is all Value. Its not even so much about the actual color, the hue. But get the Values down right and your painting can survive a number of misuses of color.
I am going to revamp my Star Wars Fan Art section on my website,so you can check out all the sketches and finished works there. In the meantime, check out phoq’s “Art Soup”,a site filled with some great art.
